Compare PayFast, Yoco, SnapScan, and other SA payment solutions for your online store.
Choosing a payment gateway is one of the most consequential decisions for a South African online store. The gateway you select affects your conversion rate, your fees, your cash flow, and the payment methods you can offer your customers. This guide compares the leading options available to South African businesses in 2025.
PayFast is the most widely used payment gateway for South African e-commerce. It supports credit and debit cards, Instant EFT from all major banks, Masterpass, and Bitcoin. Setup is straightforward, integration with WooCommerce and Shopify is well-documented, and fees are competitive at around 3.5% plus a small fixed amount per transaction. PayFast is an excellent default choice for most online stores.
Yoco started as a card reader company for informal traders but has grown into a full online payment gateway. Its strengths are simplicity, fast payouts (often next business day), and a strong mobile-first experience. Yoco is particularly well-suited to small businesses and sole proprietors who value ease of use and quick access to their funds. Fees are comparable to PayFast, and the dashboard is genuinely intuitive.
SnapScan pioneered QR-code payments in South Africa and remains popular for in-person transactions at markets, restaurants, and small retailers. For online stores, SnapScan is best used as a supplementary payment method alongside a full gateway, particularly if your customers include the large base of South Africans who already use the SnapScan app. It is less suitable as a primary gateway for a full e-commerce store.
For most South African online stores starting out, we recommend PayFast or Yoco as the primary gateway, with SnapScan added if your audience uses it. As you scale, consider layering in Ozow for lower EFT fees or Paystack for cross-border expansion. The right setup often involves two or three gateways working together — one for cards, one for EFT, and one for alternative methods. We will help you configure whatever combination best serves your customers and your margins.
Whatever you choose, never make your customers work hard to pay you. Every additional step in checkout costs conversions, and every unsupported payment method sends a customer to a competitor. Test your checkout with real users, monitor abandonment rates, and refine relentlessly.
