Understanding resolution, substrates, and finishing options for banners, posters, and displays.
Large format printing covers everything from a one-metre pull-up banner to a ten-metre building wrap. The principles are similar to standard print, but the scale introduces different considerations around resolution, materials, and finishing. This guide demystifies large format printing so you can commission banners, posters, and displays with confidence.
Large format prints are viewed from greater distances, which means they require lower resolution than small prints. A billboard viewed from 50 metres can use 30 DPI; a banner viewed from 3 metres might need 100 DPI; a poster viewed from arm's length still wants 150 to 300 DPI. The rule of thumb is that viewing distance determines acceptable resolution. Trying to print a billboard at 300 DPI wastes file size and processing time without any visible benefit. We calculate the right resolution based on the intended viewing distance of every large format job.
Finishing is what turns a printed sheet into a usable product. Banners need eyelets or pole pockets for hanging. Pull-up banners need a mechanism that retracts into a base. Vehicle wraps need precise cutting and professional installation. Indoor displays may need stand systems or frames. The finishing is as important as the print itself — a beautifully printed banner with poorly placed eyelets will tear in the wind, and a perfectly wrapped vehicle with bubbles under the vinyl looks unprofessional. Specify the finishing early in the design process, not as an afterthought.
Outdoor prints must withstand sun, rain, and wind, which affects substrate, ink, and finishing choices. UV-stable inks prevent fading; waterproof substrates prevent warping; reinforced edges and proper eyeleting prevent tearing. Indoor prints can use lighter materials and standard inks, but they still need to look good under exhibition lighting, which is often harsh and uneven. A great print supplier will ask about the installation environment before recommending materials — if they do not, find one who does.
We design, print, and install large format graphics across South Africa, from single pull-up banners for a small business conference to complete exhibition stands for major trade shows. The combination of good design, appropriate materials, and professional finishing is what produces large format work that performs — and lasts.
